I slept all day recuperating from SXSW. Lets go backwards from last night. The Dung Beatles, Glamourpuss, Rip and Destroy, and The Diamond Smugglers all played at La Zona Rosa. All of these are tribute bands, The Dung Beatles do Beatles covers (in suits and wigs) but they change the words around to fit their scatological theme. So you get A Hard Day's Shite, Eight Shits A Week, Twist And Shite, Paper Ass Wiper, It Will Be Long, Felch!, and of course Love Me Doo Doo. I know it sounds weird but trust me, it's one of the funniest damn things I've ever seen. The entire audience was dying laughing. The beautiful thing about it is they capture the essence of The Beatles impeccably, the guitar sounds, the harmonies, the faux-Liverpudlian accents. Glamourpuss is a Glam cover band complete with leather, feathers, make up, you know, Bowie, T Rex, New York Dolls, and they opened and closed with Cheap Trick's "Hello There Ladies and Gentlemen", just like Live At Budakhan.

Rip And Destroy is the Kiss tribute band that Mikey, the Spankers' drummer plays in. They are fucking great and once again they change the words around. The Paul Stanley character does the perfect between song speeches, hilarious. Where else are you gonna hear "Love Nun" and "I Sucked Your Cock and Balls All Night But I Was Drunk, I'm Not Gay"? I got to do their intro, the old "Hello San Antonio, Heavy Metal Capitol of the World! Are you ready? You wanted the second best, you got the second best. The second hottest band in the land, RIP AND DESTROY!" I think that getting the town wrong gave a personal touch, don't you?

Diamond Smugglers is a Neil Diamond tribute fronted by one of the Dung Beatles, they do Neil's stuff and covers as well, all with a vicious tongue planted firmly in cheek. The high point of there show for me was seeing them cover Motorhead's "The Ace of Spades" in full Neil Diamond splendor.

Saturday night was the Poetry Showcase. I know I was supposed to be out shmoozing record company jerks but I had to see all of my poet pals perform. There was some serious drama that went down. I think I'm gonna wait to write about it because there is bound to be a stink over it on the old slam list.

I'm tired, more on SXSW later.
